Seki Japanese Restaurant & Bar [CLOSED]
This restaurant is closed.
Opened for business last December,Seki Japanese Restaurant & Bar located at Rendezvous Gallery serves a good mix of contemporary and authentic Japanese delights made from ingredients air-flown from Japan twice a week.
Originally named after an acclaimed Japanese Chef Takuma Seki, the restaurant is now led by a culinary team of chefs, each proficient in their own ways. While the previous chef focus much on sashimi and sushi, the restaurant now shifted its focus on robatayaki, with the introduction of more grilled dishes in the menu.
Seki is still very much about the marriage of quality Japanese ingredients and modern execution styles. Our appetizer started with Hijiki & Japanese Sweet Potato.Hijiki is actually kelp,it is tossed with carrots, sesame and golden mushroom, which is a sweet start to the meal.
You can't go wrong with the Sashimi Moriawase ($42/3 kinds,$68/5 kinds) that comprises Salmon,Kanpachi,Maguro Akami. Most of their ingredients are imported from the famous Tsukiji Market in Tokyo every Tuesday and Thursday, except for Salmon which is imported from Norway. If you want to enjoy the freshest exquisite items,it is best to come on Friday.
I do steam chawanmushi once in a while and I understand that the proportion of eggs and water is the determining factor for the texture of chawanmushi.Seki serves very smooth Chawanmushi ($6) which takes a lot of time experimenting. The orange peel on top adds a little citrus taste to the dish.Seki also serves Cheese Chawanmushi ($8) and Foie Gras Chawanmushi ($9.90).
Hotate Bacon Maki Yaki ($18) was served with Ponzu & Avocado sauce. The scallops were big and fresh, but I find the avocado sauce too bland for my liking.
I enjoyed Gindara Misozuke Yaki with Su Miso ($30) thoroughly. The charcoal grilled codfish is marinated with miso seasoning and it is very tender and sweet.Seki uses binchotan charcoal to grill their ingredients. It is a type of white charcoal and is said to be healthier.
Tempura Moriawase ($26) came with tiger prawns and assorted vegetables.Batter is light and nicely complement the main ingredient taste.each tempura is juicy and we can taste the natural sweetness of the ingredients.
Seki also serves a delectable selection of handmade sushis such as Sushi Moriawase ($75/5 kinds) which consists Salmon Aburi,Anago,Ebi,Unagi Cheese Roll and California Maki. These sushis are most satisfying with an accompanying bowl of miso soup!!
Our meal ended with Shochu Raisin Ice Cream with Mint Leaf which is similar to the usual Rum & Raisin ice cream. Its shochu taste isn't too strong, which is just nice for me.
Don't forget to pair your meal with some Shochu!!
They have a private dining room where you can have a private dining session with your family and friends.
I will come back for the sushi as they are beautifully crafted and very delightful. The grilled cod fish is also not bad but the price is too steep.Seki is currently having a 1-for-1 lunch promotion, starting only from $9.90 per person, available from Monday to Sunday.
